Different Ways to Create a Room in TinyFloorPlan

Compare multiple room-building workflows so you can pick the fastest method for clean geometry and fast edits.

How to Create a Floor Plan From a Drawing

Turn a hand sketch into a clean digital plan using a practical trace-and-refine workflow.

A complete walkthrough of the core editor workflow from drawing to multi-format export.

Step-by-step

How to use each tool

Drawing rooms

Click to place wall points on the canvas. Close the shape to create a room. Area and perimeter are calculated automatically.

Floor shape templates

Choose a square, rectangle, or L-shaped template, then drag edge handles to refine the outline.

Placing symbols

Open the symbol panel, pick a category (doors, windows, furniture, bathroom, kitchen, electrical, fire safety), and click the canvas to place. Drag to reposition, use handles to resize and rotate.

Text labels

Select the label tool, click the canvas, and type your callout. Edit size and color to match your plan style.

Dimension lines

Select the dimension tool, click two points, and the distance label appears. Edit the value to adjust. Toggle metric or imperial units in settings.

Managing floors

Add, rename, reorder, and delete floors from the floor panel. Each floor maintains its own set of rooms, symbols, and dimensions.

Reviewing in 3D mode

Open the dedicated 3D project page to inspect wall volume, openings, and stacked floors. 3D mode is view-only; make edits in 2D and re-check in 3D.

Canvas navigation

Scroll to zoom, click-drag to pan, and use Fit view to reset the canvas around your plan.

Sharing projects

Open the share dialog from the project toolbar. Add members by username, assign roles (Owner / Editor / Viewer), or generate a share link.

Exporting plans

Click Export in the toolbar and choose PNG, PDF, DXF, SVG, OBJ+MTL ZIP, or STL. Exports are stored in your export history for re-download.

Personal library

Save custom symbol sets and room templates to your personal library. Reuse them across projects for consistent layouts.

Best practices

Draw faster with clean geometry

Set your unit scale early

Choose metric or imperial units before adding dimensions so everything stays consistent.

Close loops for accurate areas

Rooms calculate areas when the outline is closed. Use snapping to keep edges aligned.

Label as you go

Add text labels for room names, notes, or measurements while the context is fresh.

Save common layouts

Store rooms, symbol groups, and labels in your library to reuse across projects.

Quick-start checklist

1

Create an account or sign in

2

Create a new project from the dashboard

3

Draw your first room by clicking points on the canvas

4

Place doors and windows from the symbol library

5

Drop labels for room names or notes

6

Add dimension lines to annotate distances

7

Open the 3D page to validate volume and stacked floor alignment

8

Export to PNG, PDF, DXF, SVG, OBJ+MTL ZIP, or STL

Troubleshooting

Fix common issues quickly

Room won’t close

Make sure the last point connects to the first. Zoom in to snap precisely.

Dimensions look off

Check the unit scale in settings. It controls how pixels map to real-world units.

Export scale mismatch

Verify your unit system and scale before exporting to PDF or DXF.

3D view seems out of date

3D reflects project floor data. Make edits in 2D first, then reopen or refresh the 3D page to validate the latest geometry.

Can’t select items

Switch to Select mode and ensure the correct layer visibility toggles are enabled.
